There is probably no place in the world with such a high density of craftsmen and artisans in Bali. You name it and you can find it here woodcarving, stone carving, bone and ivory carving, silver and gold smiths, basket weavers, terra-cotta and ceramics- the list goes on forever. Here is a short list of some of the best things available and you can go to find them.

The first thing you should realize is that it is hardly worthwhile to travel up into some mountain village to single object, unless you see this as a form adventure. For the visitor on a limited schedule, a visit to one of the several galleries specializing in high quality traditional and antique arts such as the Four Seasons Gallery in Jimbaran is probably the best idea.

Here you will see the best art by the best artisans in an environment that will let you see them in the full glory. If you are still bent on finding it yourself, here are some tips:

Jegog is Jembrana’s traditional musical instrument. This instrument consist several sizes of bamboo tubes that are lined up inside a wooden frame. The name of Jegog its self is taken from the biggest instrumental component named Jegogan. Since Jegog is made of Bamboo, it offers something different from most of Balinese musical instruments that are made of metal.

Many people love watching and listening to it. Moreover, when there is a Jegog Mebarung show, a battle of Jegog that is conducted by 2 up to 3 groups in which the groups beat their bamboo in turn, the clapping hand of applauses can be heard during the show. In Jegog Mebarung the who get louder claps is the winner.

The third performance was the unique and rare Baris Jangkang from Nusa Penida Island, Klungkung regency. Baris Jangkang portrays the army of demons which served the King of Nusa Penida, Dalem Bungkut, in a war against the human troops from the main land, Bali Island.

The performance began with the appearance of two clowns with comical masks which served as attendants of Dalem Bungkut. They introduced the plot, provided some explanations on Dalem Bungkut characters and war situation. After the clown retreated, a group of dancers in red equipped with long spears entered the stage. The made a war formation and then kneeled down waited for their leaders, their waiting was not long, two dancers entered the stage, the King of Nusa Penida, Dalem Bungkut and his war lord, I Macaling. They danced grotesquely, laughed maniacally, and conversed in strange demon language, a strange but artistic performance to behold. After Dalem Bungkut and his war lord left the stage, the army of demons began to dance with their slow simple movements, depicting bizarre movements of the demons, sometimes menacing sometimes producing a slight smile on the lips of the audiences. The dancers changed their positions several times before retreating to the back of the stage.
