Tens of thousands of locals and tourists are expected to flock to the tiny resort village of Ubud, Bali, on Tuesday to witness the Palebon (cremation ceremony) of three members of the Ubud royal family.

Among the royals to be cremated is Tjokorda Gde Agung Suyasa, who formerly headed the Ubud royal family and was Bendesa (chief) of Desa Pekraman (a traditional customary village) for more than three decades.

A stoic aristocrat, Suyasa was also one of the most influential figures behind the revival of Balinese Hinduism in several parts of the country. He donated generous contributions to several major Hindu temples in Java, including the majestic Mandhara Giri Semeru Agung temple in East Java, and others in Kalimantan and Lombok.

Jegog is Jembrana’s traditional musical instrument. This instrument consist several sizes of bamboo tubes that are lined up inside a wooden frame. The name of Jegog its self is taken from the biggest instrumental component named Jegogan. Since Jegog is made of Bamboo, it offers something different from most of Balinese musical instruments that are made of metal.

Many people love watching and listening to it. Moreover, when there is a Jegog Mebarung show, a battle of Jegog that is conducted by 2 up to 3 groups in which the groups beat their bamboo in turn, the clapping hand of applauses can be heard during the show. In Jegog Mebarung the who get louder claps is the winner.

If you happen to be in Bali today, you will have a chance to see cars, motorcycles and bicycles all over the island are adorned with beautiful coconut-leaf decorations. Today, Balinese celebrate Tumpek Landep holiday; a holiday in which Balinese hold a ceremony as a homage to god Pasupati, the lord of steel implements and to express their gratitude to all steel implements which help Balinese in their everyday live.

The third performance was the unique and rare Baris Jangkang from Nusa Penida Island, Klungkung regency. Baris Jangkang portrays the army of demons which served the King of Nusa Penida, Dalem Bungkut, in a war against the human troops from the main land, Bali Island.

The performance began with the appearance of two clowns with comical masks which served as attendants of Dalem Bungkut. They introduced the plot, provided some explanations on Dalem Bungkut characters and war situation. After the clown retreated, a group of dancers in red equipped with long spears entered the stage. The made a war formation and then kneeled down waited for their leaders, their waiting was not long, two dancers entered the stage, the King of Nusa Penida, Dalem Bungkut and his war lord, I Macaling. They danced grotesquely, laughed maniacally, and conversed in strange demon language, a strange but artistic performance to behold. After Dalem Bungkut and his war lord left the stage, the army of demons began to dance with their slow simple movements, depicting bizarre movements of the demons, sometimes menacing sometimes producing a slight smile on the lips of the audiences. The dancers changed their positions several times before retreating to the back of the stage.

Two Long-Lost Sacred Keris (Swords) Receive a Homecoming Welcome to Bali.

Two priceless keepsakes of Bali’s ancient kingdoms of Klungkung and Gelgel have made a brief and very emotional homecoming to mark the 100th anniversary of the Puputan sacrifice on April 28, 2008.

On a 100 year-long journey from Bali, Holland, Jakarta and now back to Bali – two priceless bejeweled ceremonial swords or keris have been given a memorial tour of their “old home” in Bali. So revered are the two Keris that each bears it own name – Ardawaike for the sword from the Klungkung Palace and Tombake Ki Baru Gudug for the weapon from the Gelgel Palace.
